I’m a huge comic nerd. HUGE.
And I read a ton of them. Some are great, some are not so great, but really I enjoy them. Part of it, is the writing. Great writing makes great comics. And since 2010 is over, which writers did (to me) the most bang up job? Well, here they are.
10. Geoff Johns
One of the biggest writers of 2010 HAS to be Geoff Johns, he’s been key in one of the biggest DC events in recent years, and has really has revitalized a few semi stagnant books. He’s known for using past events as tools, rather than just ignoring it.
He’s very good at coming up with big ideas, and to have them linked into other books very well. He really has been hitting on all cylinders for DC. With Blackest Night he has put in the entire DCU into turmoil with former loves coming back, eating hearts.
And he’s really given focus to Green Lantern, and The Flash. He’s also been working with some of the industry’s great artists. With Doug Mahnke on Green Lantern, and Francis Manipaul on The Flash, and even Gary Frank on Superman, he’s got great talent around him. And he uses their strengths so well.
His skill has gotten him to be head of Creative Content in DC, basically putting himself as the big story guy for the entire company. And he’s going to be good at it.
9. Fred Van Lente
Fred Van Lente is a recent favorite of mine. I first started to like his work on the incredible book The Incredible Hercules.
And he’s still on that book, still doing great work. His scripts are filled with great dialogue and great plot points. Every thing he does really fits the characters as well as great bits of action. He always seems to take characters that don’t really fit the mold and make them really likable and enjoyable. Also, he helped make THIS:
And that alone is worth being on this list.
8. Adam Warren
Adam Warren is a personal favorite of mine. He does great emotional beats, and not only that he draws! And he draws well! I love his art, and his characters. In Empowered, he’s taken the super-heroine archtype, and put it on it’s ear. Empowered is fragile, layered, and prone to distress, but she’s a layered character. She’s strong when she needs to be, and she just plain adorable at times.
The best thing about his writing, is his character development. Empowered herself, just started as a commission that was about a super heroine in distress, and he made her grow into an actual heroine. And his new characters of super heroes being quirky, weird, and using a lot of slang/pop culture references in their names and such. The only real problem I have, is that times he gets very wordy, but other than that, his books are a TREAT to read.
7 Grant Morrison
Grant Morrison, to some, is the best writer in comics today. But to me, he’s just good. Better than a lot, but not the best. Grant’s got his name on some of the biggest books in the DC publishing library: Batman and Superman.
His All Star Superman has been a critically acclaimed book, and it really has some great moments. He comes up with some great and complex plots, and his dialogue is on spot the entire time. He has HUGE ideas, and really they’re ideas only he can pull off. I really can’t think of any other writer who can pull off Bruce Wayne fully saying that he’s funded Batman for years. Not only that, blatantly saying he’s going to fund other Batmen globally.
I mean, that’s a HUGE idea. But, he doesn’t get higher on my list, because he tends to be more about the idea rather than the story. His huge ideas are often weird, and don’t seem to fit right, but that is just my opinion.
6. Paul Cornell
Paul Cornell has become a huge rising star in the states. He started being a big writer for Doctor Who, but got tapped by Marvel to do a mini series starring Pete Wisdom. In that he’s brought magic back into the Marvel U, and it lead into his spectacular Captain Britain and the M13 series.
Really, he does great work. He puts in so much character into all his books. He brings up some minor characters from the Marvel U into this book and gives them great personality. Also, he had Dracula shoot vampires to earth from the MOON!
Now he’s on Action Comics, and has been writing some of the best Luthor in a while. In fact, he has Luthor just deny death. That is pretty boss.
Next time, the top 5!
All art is by their owners, and I’m just doin this for fun guys.
